About GearForPet

GearForPet.com is a research-driven pet gear review site. We compare dog and cat products, small pet housing, and aquarium equipment against welfare standards, manufacturer specs, and verified owner feedback — then tell you plainly which ones hold up and which ones don’t.

We started this site because most pet product buying guides read like the same five sentences reshuffled across a hundred websites. A harness “reduces pulling.” A litter box is “easy to clean.” A cage is “spacious.” None of that tells you anything you can actually act on. We wanted a site where every recommendation traces back to a specific, checkable reason: a mesh gauge, a VOHC seal, an IATA sizing rule, a welfare-minimum square footage figure — not a vague adjective.

Who’s Behind GearForPet

Elena Marsh researches, writes, and edits the buying guides and comparisons published on GearForPet.com. Her approach is consistent across every article on this site: start with the actual standard a product is supposed to meet — a welfare organization’s space recommendation, an airline’s carrier sizing rule, a veterinary dental seal, a manufacturer’s stated weight rating — and then check whether the product actually meets it, using verified owner reports, manufacturer documentation, and published welfare or safety guidance as the evidence base.

That’s why you’ll see articles on this site name a specific problem before naming a product — like calling out that most guinea pig starter cages sold in stores provide less than half the floor space welfare organizations recommend, or that “airline-approved” on a pet carrier listing usually isn’t backed by any actual airline. We’d rather tell you the honest, sometimes inconvenient answer than the answer that sells the most units.

How We Research and Write Our Guides

Every product roundup and comparison on GearForPet.com follows the same basic process:

  • Start with the standard, not the product. Before comparing options, we look up what the relevant welfare organization, veterinary body, or regulatory standard actually requires — cage space minimums, VOHC dental seals, IATA crate sizing, mesh gauge for predator resistance, and similar benchmarks specific to that category.
  • Cross-reference verified owner feedback. We read through hundreds of verified purchase reviews per category, looking specifically for recurring complaints — hardware failures, sizing inconsistencies, durability issues after a few months of use — rather than relying on star ratings alone, which can be skewed by review timing or unboxing excitement.
  • Check manufacturer claims against physical specifications. “Airline-approved,” “self-cleaning,” and “no-pull” are marketing phrases, not certifications. We check the actual dimensions, mechanisms, and materials against what those claims would require to be true.
  • Disclose the trade-offs, not just the wins. Every product we recommend has a “who it’s NOT for” section for a reason. A great harness for a Labrador can be the wrong choice for a Whippet. We’d rather point you to a different guide than let you buy the wrong thing.
  • Update when standards or product lines change. Product listings, pricing, and specifications shift on Amazon regularly. We revisit and update guides when a product is discontinued, a listing changes materially, or a better-tested alternative emerges.

How We Make Money

GearForPet.com is reader-supported through the Amazon Associates program and similar affiliate partnerships. When you buy something through a link on this site, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This funds the research and writing that goes into every guide — but it never determines which products we recommend. Full details are on our Affiliate Disclosure page.
